To The Bone: Ethical Issues
To the Bone is a Netflix original movie about a young women dealing with anorexia. There are many ethical issues that surround mental illness and eating disorders.
As every movie starts a screen that warns viewers about violence, strong language and scenes containing sex what they don't warn about however are portrayals of mental and physical health scares.
With To the Bone being based on an eating disorder and being streamed on the Netflix website anyone will access to the internet and Netflix account can watch it. They are one of the only films that come with this 'health warning' which states 'The film was created by and with individuals who have struggled with eating disorders, and it includes realistic depictions that may be challenged for some viewers"
This warning is right at the start of the film, it only informs the viewer about the contents of the film but it doesn't warn them about thinking before watching. This is an ethical issue as viewers could interpret the film to be 'real life'. Just as the film states they worked with those who have suffered but they aren't telling a persons story which they don't stipulate.
There have also been calls to ban the film because of fears the film might incite eating disorders, or make someone's problem worse.
Some good research here! Also the protagonist of the film had originally suffered with anorexia, so there were lots of ethical issues surrounding that as well!
