Trainspotting Case Study notes

Made in: 1996
Budget: £3.5million
Director: Danny Boyle
Writer: Andrew MacDonald
Producer: John Hodge

Plot: Heroin hooked kids, Renton (main character) wants to kick the habit despite the lack of cooperation from similarly inclines friends.

Rights to screenplay (VITAL):  Macdonald and Boyle tried to buy the rights.
Red Dwarf didn't have any interest in using the rights but once they found out that people elsewhere did they decided to make some money by offering to co-produce.

Financial Constraints:
Rudin (Producer of Sabrina and the firm)
Offers $250,000 to film whatever they want.
Channel 4: Financed the film - however they weren't giving up the rights until the screenplay was sorted so they didn't loose anymore.

Red Dwarf given $30,000 for 2% of the movie rights as long as Noel Gay (producer) back off.
Noel = No production control (pre-production) however he gets his name on the credits as well as the 2% share that he gave to Red Dwarf.

Pre-production:
"Run up period to the film" Boyle
Trainspotting took 7 weeks in pre production

  • props
  • costumes
  • art department
  • location scouting
  • casting
  • makeup/hair
Casting: Stevens and Pryor (main casting directors)
- They focused on Ewan McGregor for the role of "Renton"
- Listed the top talents to see for other larger roles
- Some parts were already earmarked (majority of the main roles)

Rehearsals began in a rented flat in a Glasgow tower block after a location recce.
In the process of scouting for locations there where many things that had to be taken into account such as:
  • lighting
  • space
  • surrounding sounds
  • permission
  • weather
  • public use
Set Design:
Drawn from real life but very much exaggerated.
Photographs creating a mood board where passed on to Boyle to see if he agreed with teh dressing of the set and if it fit the mood of the film.
Visualisation diagram = sketch

Props:
Worked on by the story board.
Scene by scene sketches

Majority of props/costumes = cheap & easy to buy as it was based on heroin addicts.
North Face lent them hiking equipment
Oxfam cast offs
Own clothes from decades earlier
